If you are like me, you are probably capable of doing many things decently well. It is both a gift and a curse. When you think of Kenny G, what do you think of? Ok, you might laugh about his hair, but you most likely think of how he plays the saxophone. You don’t care if he played quarterback on his high school football team or not. Likewise, when you think of Michael Jordan, you most likely think of a champion basketball player. He might also be a really great math wiz, but most people don’t care. These two examples show how people who will dedicate themselves to perfecting their craft will ultimately be both successful at it, but maybe more importantly it will be what they are known for. What do you want to be known for? My goal is to be known as someone who inspired people to do the work to make their dreams come true. I hope that thousands of people who end up at the top of their field will say, “Burl Walker encouraged me to get off the couch and get to work making this dream a reality and now it is!” I hope that YOU will be one of those people. Notice that I can’t make your dream come true, only you can. (Though oddly, with my dream, you can help it come true by following your own passions and making them become a reality!) Pick that one thing that you are or want to be really great at and work at it until you are the best in the world or at very least the best that you can possibly be.

There is a guy in Ashville, NC that makes sinks from clay. Like a potter, he makes them on a potter’s wheel. He puts lots of pride into his work and guess what? The sinks aren’t cheap! He can sell them for big money because each one is a one of a kind original. No one who buys one ever has to worry about going into their neighbor’s house and seeing the same sink in the guest bathroom that they just installed in their place. He is really good at what he does. Perhaps the best. Did he invent the idea of a sink? No, of course not. But he did manage to see a sink as a work of art! Now, he gets paid quite well for his functional art!

What is there in your life that may seem as common as the bathroom sink that you could turn into the greatest thing ever?  Can you work on that one thing? Like Michael Jordan, Kenny G or the pottery guy, they took something ordinary and worked at it until it was great art. (You might not think of basketball as art, but if you have watched Jordan play, you know what I mean.) Start with one thing and see how you can change the world!
