George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. In our own lives, if we don’t get a handle on our own past, we can also be condemned to repeat it. How many women do you know that it seems like they just attract jerks? Every boyfriend is abusive. Why? Because they haven’t changed themselves and so that type of man is who they are drawn towards each time. Men who constantly find themselves broke haven’t learned to save money. Their past shows them the error of their ways, but they keep jumping right back into the same old patterns.
So how do we stop the cycle in order to have a better future.
1. Take an honest look at what YOU are doing to cause problems in your life. It is easy to blame others, but when we take responsibility for our own shortcomings and begin dealing with those, then dealing with problems caused by others is easier.
2. Pick ONE issue in your life that is holding you back and begin dealing with it ruthlessly! Maybe it is a lack of education. Maybe it is a personality trait. Maybe it is your budget. You can’t solve everything at once, but if you pick that one big elephant in the room and attack it with everything in you, you can defeat it. You may need a good friend to help you out if it is an addiction, that first step will be admitting it and getting help.
3. Don’t just run away from something. Have a goal that you are working towards. For example, You aren’t just quitting drinking, you are working towards having a great sober relationship with your spouse! You don’t limit yourself with a budget, you are freeing your future from the stress of living paycheck to paycheck. You are just quitting viewing pornography, you are working towards having a focused clear mind that is capable of real world healthy relationships. Don’t just quit smoking, you are training for a 5K, 10K, 1/2 marathon, Marathon etc….
4. Once you have gotten a handle on that first thing, celebrate…then go back to #1 and reevaluate. Do you need to go through the steps again?
I hope these steps help you have a much brighter future! Start investing in YOU!
